Day 11: Dunkirk
Martyn filled and emptied out ….. Not sure the two should go together…. No one else should ever really see what Martyn was emptying….
He also got a lot of abuse as Martyn did not dare park on the grass again so blocked the exit road until he was full of water and effectively employed. There was another exit but it turned out neither she or her husband could reverse their tiny car… they actually got out of the campsite only a few minutes before we all did which was quite amusing - and the complicate owner did a classic roll of eyes at her.
Washing done and a dry morning we had bacon (well hunks of ham) sandwiches and set off and found the France l Passion site which was a car park by a warehouse - very quiet, with the obligatory cockerel and no one in site so we left the Landys and headed off for Dunkirk in the welfare vehicle - we all had a proper seat this time (Duncan was on the bed last time!)
Patrick was heading out of Rotterdam via Burger King (well, that what his sat nav said, he says differently) after his night ferry from Hull
In Dunkirk we managed to park in backstreet and we headed straight for the beach…
It was huge and very modern - a real surprise to be honest but made sense after some of us went to the Dunkirk museum when it showed how everything had been bombed in the evacuation. The whole visit was very humbling to think of the historical connections.
The museum was incredible …. And sobering.
Back to Martyn again….
Martyn walked by a bowl in a café and threw his keys in - only issue is he couldn’t remember where … ie they were lost …
He had carefully zipped his keys in his pocket at the start of the walk and only taken them out when using his wallet so Wendy, Dianne and Robin went back-tracking our steps to look for the keys
Meanwhile the rest of the team broke in through the garage taking the same route Wendy had done at the show a few weeks again when Matthew locked his Dad out of the Hymer.
Wendy and Dianne’s step count doubled and Robin was handed the keys when he returned to the coffee shop!
So we wended our way back to the campsite via a checkin at a restaurant that unfortunately only opened at the weekend and lunchtimes….
The only misadventure during the journey was sudden collapse of the seat that Kevin and Lucy were sitting on. For some reason Martyn asked if they were wearing seatbelts - not sure what difference that would have made? The verdict was that nothing was actually broken and with a few different screwdrivers and some banging it was fixed.
It did mean that for the rest of the. Journey Lucy had to take a lie down in Martyn’s bed - that was after testing out Wendy’s lap - something wrong this way round!
When we got back to the campsite, like magic, Patrick arrived from his long journey so we set up camp while Kevin and Wendy went to a naff Lidl to get stuff for a BBQ
The sun shone - there was a brisk breeze but we set up outside and enjoyed a few more bottles of the Cidre that keep appearing out of cupboards where they have been safely stowed
The BBQ was a success albeit there was a discussion about whether the sausages really were…. Sausages
Wendy did the next watermelon sculpture with the second half of the melon
Martyn continue his washing up duties and Robin started to try to work out what his gearbox issue was the rest of us chilled out - literally as it started to get pretty cold. We are missing the camp fire….
