Day 18: Last day abroad…
Amazingly most people rose relatively early and we were packed and parked up in the car park by 10:30. Patrick re-arranged his camp nearer to the hedge to get some shade as he is staying another night and all the rest of the vehicles were left for the day in the campsite car park from where we walked and then took the tram into the town of Rotterdam
The apple wars continued - this has been ever since we were in the last campsite where Wendy was parked almost in an apple tree and gained baby apples every time she moved - these have been ‘stashed’ unseen between Patrick and Wendy’s vehicles (and maybe some in Robin’s) on a daily basis - Patrick may well still have a few to find - hopefully this is discovered by sight not smell…
This was the lovely Bon Voyage parting gift for Wendy..
We had some nice smoothies to set us up for a walk through the park and to the amazing mirror building which was full of modern art (apparently)
The rabbits made us laugh..we did discover they were boiling hot as they were made from metal and it was already over 30 degrees - almost enough for Martyn’s shoes to melt as he was walking.. He had decided not to take his scooter this time
Lucy was craving a steak and Wendy wanted crepes - the steak won in the form of Burgers (nearly) all round
Martyn tried sweet potato fires for the first time and liked them…
The boys discovered a new drink Dark and Stormy- Dark Bacardi and Fevertree Ginger Beer - with lime and mint and a tampa … 3 of which might have found their way into Lucy’s bag..
We went to the Maritime museum - a lot of interactive learning opportunity and pictures - by the time we got to the boats outside in ten harbour we were probably all too tired and hot to enjoy the harbour to be honest. We also realised afterwards that we could have walked into this bit off the street.
It was then time for a bus back to the car then a very sweaty and manic journey to the port - fighting traffic and crazy truck drivers who tried to intimidate us all the way - it probably was rush hour but even so…
The radios came into good use again as we all lost each others some point but somehow managed to all keep on track through the lane changes and slip roads and tunnels
Boarding the ferry was really quick albeit Wendy and Martyn had a small wait. They were on a different deck due to height. VIP parking for Jenks:
Buddy got a full truck space ‘I want to be a camper van when I grow up’..,,
We then managed to chill out in the bar next to the window.
The football on the large TV was pretty noisy but it also did seem odd to see an actual TV again after 2 weeks without one
We later left Robin there alone…
While we sussed out where to go for food and did a rekkie on the duty free
We then all went for a snack then spent some time out on deck in the glorious evening sunshine watching Rotterdam disappear - odd to see people still on the beach at 9pm but it was still 22 degrees
A nightcap then early-ish to bed ready for disembarking and a farewell breakfast in the morning - oh, and of course we had the obligatory visit to the duty free as absolute vodka was a steal and Jammy red wine was £3 a bottle. Guess what we’ll be drinking at the next meet…
